Often lauded as the “idol’s idol,” K-pop star Taemin took to the Mojave Stage on April 11th as the first Korean male soloist to perform at Coachella! The 32-year old idol, who grew to fame as a member of K-pop group SHINEE and debuted his first solo work in 2014 with his album Ace, enraptured the audience with chilling live vocals and an intense, dance-heavy stage that has become a trademark for the powerful and conceptual performer.
With nearly 20 years under his belt in the K-pop scene as both a group member and soloist, Taemin certainly had a plethora of iconic songs to choose from to craft the setlist for his Coachella debut. And while a few classics–such as his 2017 track ‘Move’, 2020 fan-favorite ‘Heaven’, and 2023’s ‘Guilty’, of viral dance challenge fame–made the cut, Taemin took the chance to reveal nearly an entire EP’s worth of new music.
During his set, the ‘Advice’ artist performed six never-before-seen tracks for the festivalgoers. The brand-new songs included titles like ‘Frankenstein’ and ‘Parasite’, perhaps hinting at the new musical themes fans can expect for the upcoming release of his first album since joining a new company.
Taemin, though still an avid member of his group SHINEE, moved his solo work out from under SM Entertainment several years back to release music under BPM Entertainment. After several controversies surrounding BPM and unpaid earnings for idols under the label, Taemin concluded his exclusive contract and recently signed under Galaxy Corporation, joining fellow long-time K-pop star G-Dragon.
The unreleased songs Taemin performed at Coachella mark his first musical venture under the umbrella of his new company, teasing what’s to come from the ever-evolving artist. Taemin is known worldwide for his powerful vocals, dance skills, and conceptual, often darkly thematic albums that range from hard-hitting choreography-based tracks to powerhouse ballads. Given the range of the set he revealed at Coachella, fans can definitely look forward to the return of the K-pop king as they know him!
