ENHYPEN
’s back with their eighth mini-album THE SIN: BLISS, which was released on August 21st at 1:00 PM KST. With the title track ‘Bloody Paradise’ debuting at #1 on the Bugs chart for all genres and at #9 on Melon’s HOT100, what does the album have to offer?
Overview
THE SIN: BLISS concludes the story that their last release, THE SIN: VANISH, began. In VANISH, listeners were introduced to a vampire and human couple who went on the run from the Vampire Pursuit Unit to protect their taboo love. The release notice on Weverse described the sequel as “the story of the lovers as they come to accept their togetherness itself as a ‘blessing,' no matter what the end of their looming escape may look like.”
The album is narrative-driven like its predecessor, and includes four narration tracks and six music tracks. It was also released with four language versions (English, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese) to increase accessibility for the narration tracks. Listeners can also choose to only listen to the music with the additional version of the album that excludes the narration. The album has a 20-21 minute run time (slight difference between language versions), which reduces to 15 minutes with songs alone.
The Tracks
‘Two Fools’ (2:22)
‘Two Fools’ sets the atmosphere from the start. It begins with echoes that draw you in with a crescendo just before the beat drops into a pop-rock tune.
The lyrics tell about a couple wrapped up in their love, with nothing else mattering to them. However, breaking news breaks up the happy picture.
‘Breaking News’ (0:49)
The first narration track reestablishes the world listeners are returning to. The taboo couple have been discovered, and the case (along with the story) is nearing its conclusion.
‘Stuck’ (2:32)
‘Stuck’ is an off-kilter track with accidentals that produce a feeling of apprehension, only temporarily alleviated by a mellowed pre-chorus. The panic returns at the chorus—and somehow it still makes you want to dance.
The alternative hip-hop track mirrors the push-and-pull of the vampire character who realizes that the price the couple has had to pay, particularly the danger of his human lover, may not have been worth it.
‘Bad for You’ (3:15)
Sitting among high-energy tracks, ‘Bad for You’ feels like a yearning, lovey-dovey bubble in this album. It has a mellow, floaty atmosphere with a contemporary R&B style.
The song marks the group's first pop ballad and shows new sides of the members' voices—making it a sure treasure for Sunoo and Ni-Ki biases.
Despite the internal battle of the previous track, the lyrics of ‘Bad for You’ settle on one idea: this love feels inevitable.
‘Remnants of Love’ (1:27)
The second narration track brings back the same narrator’s voice from THE SIN: VANISH—instantly recognizable and a nice callback for returning listeners. The lovers’ semblance of peace is over, and they’re being chased by the Vampire Pursuit Unit again.
‘Bloody Paradise’ (2:11)
‘Bloody Paradise’ is the high-energy title track that ENHYPEN
has been teasing on their social media since early July. It features the music style of Brazilian funk, which is another first for the group but they deliver the energy well.
Story-wise, the song paints a picture of the couple making a run for it, desperate to protect their love.
‘The Final Moment’ (1:18)
With the third narration track, the lovers have been caught but they still promise to never let go, “even if engulfed in flames”.
‘Checkmate’ (2:23)
‘Checkmate’ is a song the members of ENHYPEN
have said they look forward to performing on their BLOOD SAGA world tour, and for good reason. It’s an EDM/techno track with verses that build to an intense, high-energy chorus that feels like a mini rave.
Like the beat that drives toward a reckless speed, the couple has thrown caution to the wind and fights at what feels like the edge of a cliff, hoping the odds flip to their favor.
‘Highlight’ (3:13)
This song might be the highlight of the album. Old school hip-hop is interleaved with a bittersweet, youthful chorus. Overall, the song has the feeling of laughing in the face of trouble with no regrets. ‘Highlight’ ties up the music side of the album so well, it’s surprising that it only made it into the album at the members’ request.
Lyrics such as “like Bonnie and Clyde, no way back” tie this album to the last, connecting the last song of BLISS to the first and second songs of VANISH. ‘Highlight’ ends on the theme of holding onto good memories without regret, allowing that to carry you onto what’s next.
‘The Veiled Truth’ (1:35)
After becoming a taboo, the Vampire Pursuit Unit erased the story of the vampire and human lovers from the world. We don’t know whether they were punished or were able to escape, but the narrator wishes “luck be on their side in love.”
Final Thoughts
How listenable is the music without the supporting narration?
Very listenable—every track has something to offer on its own and doesn’t need the story to support it. However, ‘Checkmate’ may not be an everyday listen if you’re not an EDM enthusiast.
How does it compare to THE SIN: VANISH?
With THE SIN: BLISS, ENHYPEN
dared to try new things and covered more genre ground than THE SIN: VANISH did, making it an even more special release for fans.
Is there more to come?
ENHYPEN
’s bloody paradise isn’t over yet—remixed versions for each member have been teased, and the Trailer vol.2 film is set to release on August 25th at 10:00 PM KST.
