KPop Demon Hunters earned one of Hollywood’s highest honors after winning Best Animated Feature at the 98th Academy Awards, held on the 16th at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

The film’s creative team — co-director Chris Appelhans, director Maggie Kang, and producer Michelle Wong — accepted the award on stage. During her emotional speech, Korean-Canadian director Maggie Kang thanked the fans who supported the film and gave special recognition to Korea. She said it meant a great deal to see a movie led by a character who looked like her finally reach this level, adding that the award was for Korea and Koreans around the world.
Chris Appelhans spoke about the power of music and storytelling to bring people together across cultures and borders. He also encouraged young artists and musicians everywhere to share their stories with the world.
Producer Michelle Wong thanked the film’s partners, including Netflix and Sony Pictures, as well as her family for their support.
KPop Demon Hunters tells the story of girl group HUNTR/X
, who secretly live as demon hunters battling the evil boy group Saja Boys, a dark force that feeds on human souls.
The movie had already built strong momentum during awards season. In January, it won Best Animated Film and Best Original Song at the Golden Globe Awards. It was also nominated last month at the Grammy Awards for Best Song Written for Visual Media, making it the first K-pop-related work to receive that recognition.
Its Academy Award win further confirmed the film’s global success, beating major competitors including Disney’s Zootopia 2 and Pixar’s Elio.
Adding to the excitement, EJAE, Audrey Nuna, and Rei Ami, who voiced members of HUNTR/X
, are also scheduled to perform the film’s theme song “Golden” at the Academy Awards ceremony.
