The 2025 MTV VMAs took place last night (September 7) at the UBS Arena in Long Island. One of the biggest moments of the night took place when it was announced that Rosé had won the award for Song Of The Year for her Bruno Mars collaboration ‘APT.’
It marks the first time in VMAs history that a K-pop act has won Song of the Year. In a lengthy and emotional speech, she thanked Bruno, her fans, her BLACKPINK bandmates, her parents and members of her team.
She also dedicated the win to her younger self: “I feared that somewhere along this journey of pursuing my dreams, I might hit a wall and possibly disappoint my 16-year-old self who grew up always an oddball amongst society that wished some day she too could be herself and equally pursue her dreams just as well as anyone else I saw on television. 12 years later, I dedicate this award to my 16-year-old self who dreams and to all those who have watched me grow into the artist I am today.”
‘APT.’ was named one of NME’s best 50 songs of 2024 and one of NME’s best 25 K-pop songs of the year. The song also scored a glowing five-star review, with NME’s Rhian Daly writing: “Truthfully, Rosé has never sounded as good as she does here. There’s a power and confidence in her voice that far surpasses her past performances, and the vintage pop-rock riffs and attitude – which echo with elements of Toni Basil, Blondie and Joan Jett – feel sublimely suited to her as an artist. Addictive, flirty and a whole lot of fun, ‘APT.’ is the perfect introduction to Rosé’s new chapter.”
Elsewhere at the 2025 MTV VMAs, BLACKPINK were crowned Best Group, while Rosé’s bandmate Lisa won the Best K-pop award for her hit song ‘Born Again’ with Doja Cat and RAYE.
Ariana Grande took home the night’s biggest award, Video Of The Year’ for ‘Brighter Days Ahead’, while Lady Gaga was crowned Artist Of The Year, Rosé and Bruno Mars won Song Of The Year for ‘APT.’ and Mariah Carey was awarded the Video Vanguard award for her historic career.
Yungblud and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have also paid tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne with a touching performance. Check out the full list of winners here.
