Yesterday, BTS
kicked off their ‘Arirang’ world tour with an explosive first show at Goyang Stadium. The 7-member supergroup performed on a huge 360-degree stage for an audience of over 40,000 people. And while the weather may not have cooperated, the group’s long-awaited first concert in nearly 4 years certainly went off with a bang! The rain, which began shortly before the show and continued into soundcheck and throughout the performance, came down hard on the members, but their powerful performance and the excitement of the audience beat the storm, and BTS
celebrated their return to the stage with pyrotechnics, fireworks, and some of their greatest hits.
The setlist was comprised of some of BTS
’s most famous tracks, including ‘Butter’ and ‘Dynamite’, while mixing in surprises for long-time fans such as ‘Not Today’ from their 2017 album You Never Walk Alone. And of course, they included nearly all of the songs from their massively successful comeback album Arirang, which was released on March 20th and has dominated the Billboard 200 for nearly three weeks and counting.
Due to the weather, BTS
was forced to make some adjustments to their planned performances. In a Weverse livestream after the show, vocalist and main dancer Jimin expressed that because of the water onstage, they could not show all the choreography that they had prepared for the show. He went on to hint that weather permitting, future shows may see more dance moves from the group. But rain or shine, there was no shortage of dedicated fans ready to witness the legendary comeback of the biggest band in the world.
Goyang Stadium in Goyang, South Korea, has a capacity of approximately 40,000, and among the huge audience for this kick-off concert were stars themselves. Other idols and Korean celebrities were spotted in the crowd today, including Jongho of ATEEZ
, all five members of fellow BIGHIT group TXT, Bangchan of Stray Kids
, Wonyoung of IVE
, along with actors Lee Sung Kyung, Kim Min Jae, and more.
BTS
will perform (hopefully beneath clearer skies!) for two more days in Goyang before moving to Tokyo for two tour stops and finally kicking off their U.S. stretch of the tour in Tampa, Florida on April 25th.
