Dream To You Is More Than A Romance–It’s About Finding The Courage To Begin Again

Some dramas entertain you. Others quietly hold up a mirror. After only four episodes, I realized I wasn’t just watching Yi Jae chase her dream–I was confronting my own. As a longtime Hwang In Yeop fan (Team Seo Jun forever), I knew I was excited to start this drama. I didn’t expect it to challenge me in the process.

Lesson 1: Communication is vital to maintain and repair relationships.

This may sound cliche, but this drama has shown me that it is important, necessary even, to communicate our feelings to the people who love us. I understand Yi Jae–she feels betrayed by her best friend. Soo Bin essentially stole her dream of becoming a film director. She felt left behind, and he was acting (unknowingly) like a total jerk towards her. And once she communicated that to him, he changed his behavior and apologized. We love a man who apologizes.

I love how both Soo Bin and Yi Jae are able to be so open and honest with each other. I guess that’s what comes from a long-term friendship. This drama does a great job of balancing the fact that these two know and understand each other very well, but are still in the middle of a misunderstanding. Soo Bin wants Yi Jae to finish the screenplay they started as high schoolers, but Yi Jae is almost afraid of making her dreams a reality.

Lesson 2: Bitterness hurts the one holding it more

To be fair to Soo Bin, from his perspective, Yi Jae gave up after her accident and her father’s death. She took a more practical job, started caring for her mother and brother, almost like she felt responsible for her father’s death. She no longer seems interested in pursuing her dreams. Soo Bin left an abusive home and decided to make his own path; Yi Jae just hasn’t arrived there yet. She is still stuck to her past, and harboring bitterness toward Soo Bin is not helping. 

It’s kind of funny how the pair seems to have switched personalities since high school–Soo Bin used to be a bit timid and passive, but now he is being super encouraging, annoying Yi Jae into doing what he wants her to do. Yi Jae used to be the cheerleader friend, hyping everyone up and bossing them around, like a real film director, but now regret and bitterness has turned her passive.

Watching Yi Jae slowly let go reminded me that bitterness rarely punishes the person who hurt us. Most often, it keeps us from becoming the person we are meant to be.

Lesson 3: Dreaming our dreams and achieving our dreams are two different things.

I am personally inspired by episodes 3 and 4 in particular, because that is when we see Yi Jae making the changes in her life that are needed in order to make her own path toward film direction. I’ve done a lot of the same this past year–my dream of becoming a published author is now a reality because of it. My biggest regret is that it took me this long to start trying.

Yi Jae leaves her toxic job, joins Soo Bin’s company, and locks in to finish her screenplay. It took letting go of her feelings of responsibility toward her family, disappointing her mother, and learning to hold the fear of the unknown without letting it control her or hold her back to get here, but I am so proud of her for trying.

It’s easy to sit in our comfort zone, in the known world, and dream of the bigger and better version of our lives. It’s a whole different ballgame to actually start building towards that dream. 

Dreaming it is safe–the only negative part is knowing it's not real. Achieving, on the other hand, is dangerous. 

You could fail. The dream could be unrealistic in the end. Maybe you’ll realize you don’t actually like the dream after all. But I believe it is better to try than it is to never know.

Conclusion

Dream To You succeeds because the romance isn’t separate from the characters’ growth–it grows alongside it. The childhood friends-friends-to-rivals-to-lovers dynamic, the slow burn, and the second chances all reinforce the same central idea: it’s never too late to become the person you were meant to be.

If the first four episodes were any indication, Dream To You won’t just be one of my favorite dramas of 2026. It will be one I’ll return to whenever I need the courage to chase my own dreams again.
