Kevin Moon of THE BOYZ Releases Empowering Solo EP FREECHILD

Later that year, they signed with One Hundred Label, but soon after began a series of legal disputes over lack of payment and an alleged breakdown of trust between artist and company. On September 2nd, 2026, Kevin released FREECHILD, his debut solo EP, independently and without the backing of his label. The album consists of four tracks: title track "FREECHILD", "Manifesto", and two versions of the final song, "Focus On Me." Thematically, the album speaks to creative freedom and rebellion through lyrics centered around empowerment and self-expression. With just three songs, Kevin shows his diversity as a solo artist, beginning with the upbeat call to action of "FREECHILD" and ending with the softer and more introspective tone of "Focus On Me." The project not only highlights a diverse sound but also seems to touch on the often-restrictive nature of the K-pop industry through an exploration of personal style. In an interview with MuchMusic, Kevin states, "I've been a creative person all my life...But unfortunately we've never had the environment where creativity and artistry was ever really favored... Everything's up in the air [right now] and I thought this is the best time to release music all on my own."

The album release comes shortly after Kevin expressed thoughts on the industry and certain companies' habits of repressing creative liberties in the interest of consumerism. In a post on X, Kevin states, "It's always troubled me to have the most dedicated fans in the world but having been restricted to shoving regurgitated trends down your throats. I'm glad to have made memories [for you] but it never sat right with me that [you] were simply part of a business model." In a separate post, he goes on to write ahead of the FREECHILD release, "My release is going to be different for sure. I did it not for the sake of being different but doing what suited my message best. It's going to push some buttons but I believe that artists should be the last people on earth to walk on eggshells."

The album and its self-promoted rollout certainly go against the standard grain for many K-pop idols. But its contents are also a showcasing of rawness and honesty that are rare in today's musical landscape, and his candid conversations with fans online are even rarer in an industry that often relies on carefully cultivated and managed images of its stars. Kevin's album begins by boldly calling for a shift in the authenticity that is presented to its audience and leads the way using the songs that follow. Such levels of vulnerability can be controversial in any celebrity space, but it is perhaps especially true of K-pop, where the relationship between fan and artist is sometimes closer than usual.
