After decades in the underground music scene, Korean rock’s sub-genre of idol pop-rock was born in the mid-2000s with FTISLAND and pushed rock to the surface. The hybrid model kept popular rock sounds and live instruments while also marketing the members as much as the music. Adopting idol aspects like fandom naming and photocards took Korean pop-rock to an international mainstream within a decade or two with groups like DAY6 and the Rose.

The Pioneer: FTISLAND

While maintaining the “flower boy” aesthetic that came with Korean idol groups at the time, the band was able to present a powerful pop-rock sound with live instruments—a combination that is recognized as the first of its kind. Fans love their debut song ‘Lovesick’ (reminiscent of 2000s K-drama soundtracks), and the now three-member group will make a comeback next week with their Japanese single ‘Lemonade.’

The Modern Pillars: DAY6 and The Rose

DAY6

Currently a four-piece band, DAY6 (left) debuted in 2015, and they have become one of the biggest Korean pop-rock groups since then. Rather than overnight fame, DAY6 had a steady climb to the top as the first group of their kind under JYP Entertainment. In 2019, they pushed into the mainstream with their album The Book of Us: Gravity and have remained there since. For those new to DAY6, their songs ‘You Were Beautiful’, ‘Shoot Me’, and ‘Congratulations’ are great places to start.

The Rose

Arguably the most popular rock group to come out of South Korea, the Rose (right) made history in 2024 as the first Korean band to perform at Coachella. They debuted in 2017 after coming together independently as a band and signing with a label that promoted them like K-pop idols. The four-member group gained international popularity through their debut song ‘Sorry’, a foothold that allowed them to tour internationally as rookies. In 2025, their hit song ‘Back to Me’ was in Spotify’s ranking for the most streamed top five K-rock songs globally, second only to DAY6’s ‘You Were Beautiful’. Now, the Rose is releasing its self-titled album ROSE on Aug. 30 at 13:00 KST before an indefinite hiatus for individual activities.

An Established Popular Pick: Xdinary Heroes

Following their seniors at JYPE, Xdinary Heroes debuted in 2021 with their first single ‘Happy Death Day.’ Since then, they have been consistent with their punchy, unapologetic sound, delivering fresh music with a familiar feel every comeback. However, JYPE terminated their exclusive contract with leader and drummer Gunil earlier this month following public controversy. There has been no announcement of a search for a replacement member, so we can expect Xdinary Heroes’ sound to be different going forward. Dragon Pony

Originally formed independently in 2022, Dragon Pony (top) debuted in 2024 after signing with their current label, Antenna. Just a year later, they were named as Billboard’s K-pop Rookie of the Month in May 2025. This week, bassist Pyun Sunghyun officially departed from the group after a month-long, health-related hiatus. The Weverse announcement mentioned that Dragon Pony will be continuing as three members. For this rookie group, their latest Korean album ‘RUN RUN RUN’ is an excellent starting point.

Pronounced “hearts wave”, hrtz.wav (bottom) is a five-member global boy group formed through Mnet’s survival show “STEAL HEART CLUB.” Despite only debuting this past April, they are already leaving an impression, having participated in the OST for the K-drama “The Perfect Crown”, which stars K-pop senior IU. hrtz.wav is set to make their comeback next month with their second mini-album, The Second Wave: MOMENTUM, which releases on Sep. 9 at 18:00 KST.
