‘KPop Demon Hunters 2’ probably won’t be released before 2030

The heads of the studio behind KPop Demon Hunters have indicated that a sequel will not be ready until at least 2030.

Released last year on Netflix, the animated film about a K-pop girl group who live a double life fighting demons was an instant success. It became the streamer’s most successful movie of all time, understandably sparking talk of a follow up.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, joint presidents of Sony Pictures Animation Kristine Belson and Damien de Froberville discussed the film’s success, while also indicating when the sequel will be arriving.

At one point in the article, the interviewer asserts that the long production process needed for animated films makes reports of a 2029 date for KPop Demon Hunters 2 seem “far-fetched”. In response, Belson “places her pointer finger to her nose, to indicate that’s correct thinking.”

As to what the second movie could be about, De Froberville said: “The world is so rich — the world of the demons and the pop star [element], what happened to Jinu. There’s so much we could expand into.”

The film is currently on the awards campaign trail, and recently won Best Song at the Golden Globes. Singer EJAE used her acceptance speech to reflect on her early struggles in the music industry.

Despite not eligible for contention at the BAFTAs, the singing stars of KPop Demon Hunters have been announced as performing the hit song ‘Golden’ at this year’s awards. They are also scheduled to perform at this year’s BRIT Awards.

Despite the movie’s success, Mark Sonnenblick, one of the writers of ‘Golden’ remains unsure whether he will be involved in a sequel. “There’s going to be a whole development process before we get deep into writing the songs,” he told the BBC. “The music will follow from the story and that’s if it makes sense for us all to be doing it again.”
